Ok, this happened to me this evening
I met (well, u can say date) a guy that I've been chatting with for few weeks for the first time.
We had a good chat, in fact the chemistry was there, and he did not use a SINGLE English word.

But then when we met, he started to pretend to be like an ENGLISHMAN
but not in correct way, not in correct grammar, not in correct pronunciation, and the worst is he insisted to be "Oh look how good my english is".

No I am not saying he's bad or so, but he gave me bad impression for the first meeting.
No I am not saying his English is bad (it's bad to be honest), but don't u think it's toooo pathetic and toooo show-off he is?

Because of this character, the chemistry is gone (on my side) and I don't think I want to see him again (though I said "see you next time").

My point is, I don't like someone trying to impress me by showing off.
Don't u think it's much better to speak your native language (as we both DO understand) instead of making you look stupid?

note : he started speaking English on whole conversation after I told my education background, but I replied everything in native.

Deskripsi diri: Hopeless romantic and a cuddling addict.
and since our childhood times we are forced to have a confidence in what we do.
maybe he's just a tad bit over-confident?
or maybe God knows what crossed his mind then.
at least the poor man tried? lol

Deskripsi diri: Ask me
I know exactly how you feel.

Well, the good side is at least he tried :)
But please, hearing horrible english is like hearing cinta laura saying the catchphrase "udah hujan, becek, ga ada ojek".
It's funny when you hear it the first time, but when you hear it several or many times, it's kind of getting annoying or even disgusting.
That's why i also prefer people talking with the language they're fluent with. At least they're good to hear.

Well it's better for you to say it straight to him, "I prefer you talking in Indonesian, because it's better to hear." or something similar.
If he's a nice guy, he'd surely willing to do so.

yeah I know that, still in learning process

recently my mind is always on the opposite side :(

Well to be honest I want to correct him, at least he wont make same impression I had with the next person he's gonna see :)
I know that he's a nice guy though....

But I don't know how I'm supposed to say, on the way that he won't feel I'm getting so obnoxious or sounds smart by correcting him :)

Well, i think it's better for you to correct him several times.
He'll think again whenever he's about to make statement, and will ask you whether it's right or not.
Don't make it too serious though, it's better if you make it sounds like a joke.

Deskripsi diri: cold and passive [] ask and i will answer your question
he started to pretend to be like an ENGLISHMAN
but not in correct way, not in correct grammar, not in correct pronunciation, and the worst is he insisted to be "Oh look how good my english is".

if he want to pretend.. or lets say he tried to use english... and kind of willing to learn... then it's fine to help him... to use better english.. in the correct way.. grammar, pronounciation and whatever....

but if he doesn't know that his english is... speechless.... and still insisted on "i am the best in using english than my native"
i think.. it is acceptable to smack some sense back to him by using the real english in native speaker speed and ask whether he is understand correctly what you uttered to him

and in what accent did he speak english... if he did speak like cinta laura english accent...
i will definetely shut him up at that moment and tell him to speak indonesian... or even forced him to speak indonesian...
coz... hearing those cinta laura accent...make my blood a lil bit heated after quite a while... moreover if he used it in the whole conversation....

just tell him to use indonesian later (if you gonna meet him again)
or.. yeah.. being obnoxious and show him that his english is.. somehow in the worse category

i understand sand's feeling...
nothing more annoying than
someone who boasted and believes that he is good at something yet in reality... he suck in it....
it is the most... complicated thing could ever happened
you feel bad if you tell him that "you are way too bad in that area"
yet... if you tell him... it might utterly broke his self confidence and his vanity (it is good if his vanity that is broken)
in the other hand... if you don't tell him... both your mind and heart will scream for sanctuary XD

You might as well smack some sense back into him lol. If he thinks you're obnoxious for correcting him, then tell him you think he's an idiot for being proud with his broken English, then you'll be even :P

but everything I respond is by Indonesian :)

O, yes.. it's English Corner! Of course.
Sorry for being so ignorant hoho
So yes, my point is that English is a language with a great many grammar rules, so I don't blame this poor chap, though he took the risk at his own peril!!

Haha I see, in this case perhaps, the motto "silence is gold" is needed. Doesn't mean that he has to be totally silence, but at least not to be that over confidence especially in creating a good impression to someone that you just met. Personally, I think it's ok for you to "revive" him back from his talk by reminding him about his grammar nazi in a friendly way like make a joke of it but don't embarrass him too much ;)

I don't mind to hear those horrible speakers, or the horrible writers. Just keep in mind, english wasn't, ain't, and won't be our mother language. Not even the native speaker can speak english perfectly. Be honest, we never try to speak indonesian precisely and perfectly, do we not? I'll ask you, all of you, right here and right now, which is the right one:
1. Izin or ijin
2. Zaman or jaman
3. Terdiri dari or terdiri atas
4. Mengubah or merubah
etc.
Where should we put this word: in the front of sentence or in the middle?
1. Namun
2. Meskipun
3. Meskipun demikian
4. Walaupun
5. Walaupun demikian
6. Tetapi
etc.

D'u prefer to speak strict indonesian for your daily routine? I don't think you would :) or people will think that you're a weirdo or nerdy. So do the english speaker :)

But, I still remember an awkward movie by Raffy Ahmad, some years ago. He wanted to say, "I am the guy!" But, instead of spoke "guy", he spelled it as "gay" :|
And I made a poker face :|

okay, we were chatting quite long, and I got to tell u somehow he's interested to me :)
I know english is hard, and yes I do appreciate him for giving a shot

I like to have chat for the first meet, by then I can see what and how this person behave :)
I do asked him some personal questions, as u know a nice chit chat at a coffee house would be very decent and relaxed

can u help me by giving example on how I should correct him?

for some parts in my routine, I somehow slipped some English word, not because I'm trying to show off or being too confident, but there are words that is just difficult to abbreviate in Indonesian, or somewhat is too long
why? Because I have spent some time studying abroad where all (almost) my close friends are speaking English and they don't speak Indonesian, and I just get used to it, and believe me it becomes my daily routine and a must :)

I know it's horrible to say this, but to me, it's even more horrible when someone does not know how bad his English is, and being over confident.

The problem must be his over confidence, and never be his english, isn't it?

But I start to worry. Since the first day this corner was made, some of us started to grumble about the grammatical and tense. English never be a favorite subject in indonesia, I'm afraid that many GIF members afraid to come and join this corner because of the same reason.

Let them be. Every birds must learn to fly before they can really fly, every one of us must learn how to drive before we can really drive.

The singaporean just proud of their singlish, and so the japanese. We're indonesian after all, and I can say, world can say, that our english is better than them.

Believe me, I'm also getting a high temper when I'm driving just before a car which its driver just learn how to drive. But, I force my mind to remember that I, once, also learned how to drive and people surround me also tried to be patient.

Sorry, out of the topic :p

Basically, I'm afraid that this post drives other GIF members out from this corner.

And if I were you, I think I would use english, too. I don't know him, but for the sake of positive thinking, he just wanted to improve his english, but his way had made you though he was over confidence. Dunno, just my thinking.
