I'm curious. i wonder what english accent is hardest to listen to.

we got american, british, australian, orang even singaporean, indian, and many different accents depending on their nationality.

for me the hardest to listen to is the australians.

their accent is so weird and you have to think twice to understand what they're saying.

do you have any experience speaking or listening to other native speakers? thanks :)

american, english and aussie accent are still better than asianic english
it is for me the worst english accent ever...
it's like hearing multiple combination of accent at once that make you gonna wonder whether it is the same word that run into your mind and their mind or not ><.
and it will be worse if the utterance is in full speed...
you definetely gonna say "what ?"

that is in my opinion though... XD

For me, Australian is the worst. (Unless you conclude Japan accent, I can't understand it at all)

The only problem for Asian accent is that we often can't spell some words right. For example, Indonesian usually spell "flour" just like to spell "floor" instead of "flower".

well... if only talking bout the main english language user...
the chronicles are...
british english

then

american english

lastly

australian english

that's why when i learned about their society and culture (in my university life)
my lecturer said that the purest form of english is the british english
while australian english is the coarse or rough version...
since the background of australian themselves are criminals from english and american whose sentenced into Australia
so.. i won't be much surprising that their english is the lowest in caste...

but yeah... asianic english is kind of worse than the worst english...
but again.. it is not our main language XD

The hardest accent for me is rapid American accent (any american accents said rapidly, i hurts my brain, Girls, I don't know what r u talking 'bout) Especially some southern one.

Some accent in English are quite hard as well to understand, like the Cockney accent, I am not buying anything when they speak fast.

Australian is the hardest, they speak like the british but with another hardest intonation, I dont even hear what they say word per word.

Asian English is fine to hear, because some of them are still learning and they pronounce everything clearly even in their own language. (if they pronounced it right)

The hardest part is gonna be European speaking English. Not French because I speak french so I understand when they speak English, but another country is sure hard to understand.

I dont know why,

I love british english very much, *hug
It would be lovely if I could speak to british people

I love watching british english movie, british stories is cool.
Harry Potter, Narnia, sherlock holmes, spiderwick, nanny mcphee, and many more..

If we talk about accent or dialec, I think there is nothing to be worried about. It's common for human being.
it probably about their own 'local tenses'. Yeah, I ever seen reportase about Australian english language in tourism program. Australian english is special in spite of they are still british people generation.

talk about asian people who talk in english, hmm... generally they talk as they know and they can as simple as, especially the elder. haha
it probably just the same problem, they dont get the tenses well, and they native language obstruct their english pronounciation.

YEAH... so complex, as like you now, japanese, koreanese, chinese, and some other are bad at pronounciation

*cmiiw

I think we should draw the line between the accents that originate from native english speakers and non-native english speakers. Personally I don't think Singlish, Manglish, or Japanglish are eligible 'accents' since they are already broken from the start. Basically it's natural for us who expect the original form of the language to not understand, considering their language have gone through mutations and assimilation with the local language.

For me personally I think the Scottish accent is very difficult. Australian is just like, an exaggerated version of the British English. The Scottish, however, pronounce lots of words very differently, despite being grammatically correct.

For me, those who need extra attention to listen to are Australian with their "kumur2" accent and you know what else? Southern American accent (spoken by people from Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, etc). Tbh, it's kinda difficult for me to get what the people said when I watched "Honey Boo Boo" on YouTube with their Southern accent. And even in some scenes, they put subtitles in english for those who couldn't get the accent spoken on that video...

Actually there are lots of English accents. And there is no "original English accent" nor "native English".
As is proposed by an Indian linguistic professor. Because the accent itself originates from the mixing of English language with local dialects which further back originates from traditional local language.
A bit surprise for me, there is actually no actual "British accent" .
Because in UK itself there are several regional accents such as :
- Irish accent -> Interaction with Gaelic language
- Scottish accent ->Interaction with Scottish language
- Newcastle accent -> Interaction between Old English with Old Scottish
- West Midlands accent -> Interaction between Old English with Nordic (yes the vikings)
- East Midlands accent - > Interaction between Southern English with West Midlands
- Lancashire Accent -> Interaction between english and irish (less irish dialect compared to Irish dialect with scottish influence)
- Welsh accent -> Interaction between English and Welsh
- London Accent (most foreigner confused as british accent)
and sooooo many more. Believe me they all different :|

Many people overly-stressed the importance of accent in English learning.
To my surprise, my English tutor in UK said "Accents and speed is not that important , just stick to the correct grammar and clear pronunciation, let yourself speak English in your own way in the correct way. Fluency in English has nothing to do with the accents you are using"

When I read the posts above, I thought to myself that the southerners are actually easy to listen to. I don't know why, but their accents are just clear to me. Maybe I'm just used to listening to them

I think parts of europe are difficult to hear. almost as blur as the australian accent

For me, American southern accent is difficult, they're just like humming around or something most of time. Australian and British are difficult as well, but the most difficult are Asian accents like Indian or Singaporean. Yet, if you are talk to someone from American southern, Australian and British accents, they will used to international accents which are understandable.
