Deskripsi diri: Hi there
Joesman menulis:
Actually there are lots of English accents. And there is no "original English accent" nor "native English".
As is proposed by an Indian linguistic professor. Because the accent itself originates from the mixing of English language with local dialects which further back originates from traditional local language.
A bit surprise for me, there is actually no actual "British accent" .
Because in UK itself there are several regional accents such as :
- Irish accent -> Interaction with Gaelic language
- Scottish accent ->Interaction with Scottish language
- Newcastle accent -> Interaction between Old English with Old Scottish
- West Midlands accent -> Interaction between Old English with Nordic (yes the vikings)
- East Midlands accent - > Interaction between Southern English with West Midlands
- Lancashire Accent -> Interaction between english and irish (less irish dialect compared to Irish dialect with scottish influence)
- Welsh accent -> Interaction between English and Welsh
- London Accent (most foreigner confused as british accent)
and sooooo many more. Believe me they all different :|

Many people overly-stressed the importance of accent in English learning.
To my surprise, my English tutor in UK said "Accents and speed is not that important , just stick to the correct grammar and clear pronunciation, let yourself speak English in your own way in the correct way. Fluency in English has nothing to do with the accents you are using"

Well I do agree with that. If you could try and learn to understand what the other party is trying to say, I think it would be better. It's kind of silly for me to see that many people (especially those who are attending English taught classes / universities) would blame the *Accent* of any particular individuals, rather than assessing their listening ability instead.

On a separate topic, I find it most difficult to understand mainland Chinese accent and Scots'. I guess there's still a long way to go for me to try and understand them :) (but I know at least I have to try rather than to assign the blame to *them*) lol.

Personally for me the most baffling accent of them all is the Scottish.... I watched a lot of Bondi Rescue on Natgeo People and I thought Australian accent is just okay :hihihi:

Once when I was preparing for iBT I noticed somewhere in their website that the test will include a variety of officially recognized accents, which includes the British, Australian, Indian, and New Zealand accent. So I went to Youtube to check the New Zealand accent, which I have never heard before, but in the end it didn't show up on the test :fuih: One of the native New Zealander asks a non-native 'Are you knackered?' in such a way that it only heard as 'Are you n4ked?' by the non-natives =3=

Ah, I'm also a newbie here, and have yet to introduce myself :maap: I wish we could get along well~

BTW people i have question, is there any of you hard to change your native accent? I mean like your dialect and some intonations? Because I have friend who actually get rid of their accent and thats really cool. I have some *wow im really bad* prejudice against people with their accent actually. It is fine for me with australian or any native accents but I am not really comfortable hearing language, especially English, spoken by non-native with their native accents. If some of you have opinions please let me hear it. Because I am planning to build some language school or community to get rid of accents. (its cool speaking another accent aggreee???!!!)

I love british accent the best.

The hardest accent to listen is French english accent, you can't hear clearly and it sounds like french not english

The most funny is italian accent

The easiest of course americans

Irish dialect isn't that easy but very manly to hear lol

But, we could agree that it's much difficult to comprehend dialects outside britain's influenced countries, which includes china, india, and malaysia regardless of their former relation with the commonwealth.

Wonder why people think british accent is difficult? I think it's relatively easy. Oh and btw, there are MANY kinds of british accents. Most common ones that we hear in the movies are posh british (the royalty and news anchor type) and cockney or london british (jason statham). Both are quite easy to understand for me, albeit with practice, but ones like scottish are... well... unintelligible. Met a scottish guy once and I thought he was talking in an unknown european language. Took me 5 mins to realize he was talking in english :D

Oh and anyone here also loves australian accent? Like how yvonne strahovski (actress) says it :fallinlove:
